Christmas cookies around my house are a grand tradition. When we were little, nothing was as fun as making the traditional family recipe Christmas cookies with our mom. She would whip up huge batches of traditional sugar-type cookies, cut into Christmas shapes (Santa Claus, Angel, Christmas tree) then make simple powdered sugar frosting colored with old fashioned dye, placing the frosting in little saucers. Then we would all gather around our large kitchen table decorating the cookies and garnishing them with little silver balls, red hots and sprinkles. Now as my children have grown up, I still cherish the memories, yet add some fun and flavor to the cookies by using flower cut outs and hearts, and mixing wild colors, and frost away the afternoon, hoping that some of the kids will stop by and join in.
